Bootleg Film (1999)

Bootleg Film is a Japanese movie written and directed by Masahiro Kobayashi. It was screened at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 1999 and released by Monkey Town Productions in Japan on December 1, 1999.

The movie is a darkly comic road movie about two friends, Tatsuo (Akira Emoto) and Kiyoshi (Kippei Shiina), who are traveling to the funeral of a woman they both loved named Fumiko.

While remembering Fumiko, the two stir up old resentments toward each other which is only made worse by their chosen career paths: Tatsuo is a retiring yakuza and Kiyoshi is a cop. They eventually meet a young couple who discover a corpse in the trunk of Tatsuo and Kiyoshi’s car. To make matters worse, the corpse is Tatsuo’s brother!
