The movie is set in Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture during the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Aiba is a retired funeral-home employee who volunteers at a local senior citizens’ center which is being used as a makeshift morgue.

Initially upset with how the bodies of the dead are being handled by rescue workers, Aiba takes it upon himself to remedy the situation by taking charge, instructing other workers, and caring for the bodies in a respectful manner in spite of the traumatic circumstances unfolding around them.
