Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter (2014)

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter is an indie movie written and directed by David Zellner. The production budget was reportedly around $1 million. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2014.

The film is loosely based on the true story of a Japanese woman who was believed to be searching for the money buried by Steve Buscemi’s character in the 1996 movie Fargo.

Plot

A delusional young Japanese woman named Kumiko believes a satchel of money buried in a fictional movie is still buried somewhere in rural Minnesota, and only she holds the key to finding it. The locals she meets realize she’s crazy, but they’re too polite to mention it.
