Director Hirokazu Kore-eda (After Life, Still Walking) has been consciously avoiding adapting other people’s stories for over a decade now, but he’s decided to break this self-imposed ban for his next project, Air Doll (Kūki Ningyō). The story, which is based on a Yoshiie Goda manga, revolves around a lonely video store clerk (Arata Iura) who meets a blowup doll that recently came to life. South Korean actress Doona Bae plays the doll. This marks Bae’s second Japanese film, the first being Nobuhiro Yamashita’s 2005 indie hit, Linda Linda Linda.
It sounds suspiciously like a plot for pinku fan service, but Kore-eda intends to convey the deeper emotional impact of the story, exploring both the pain and joy of being alive.
The production also released a still of Bae in her blowup doll garb to the major media outlets:
Asmik Ace Entertainment intends to roll the film out at Cinema Rise in Shibuya, Tokyo this Fall, followed by nation-wide release.comments powered by Disqus
