Hana: The Tale of a Reluctant Samurai (2006)
Hana: The Tale of a Reluctant Samurai is a Japanese jidaigeki movie written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. It was released by Shochiku in Japan on June 3, 2006.
The movie is set in 1702 Japan during a time of peace. However, poverty is still a widespread problem. Meanwhile, a young warrior named Soza is on a mission to restore his family name by avenging his murdered father.
Soza’s mission is sponsored by samurai in Edo and he stands to collect a 100 ryo reward for successfully exacting his vengeance. However, he’s soon confronted by his own ineptitude with a blade and the harsh reality of perpetuating a seemingly endless string of hate and revenge when there may be a less harmful alternative.
