Hanging Garden (2005)
Hanging Garden is a Japanese movie written and directed by Toshiaki Toyoda. It was released by Asmik Ace Entertainment in Japan on October 8, 2005.
The film revolves around the Kyobashi family. To the outside observer, they would seem like well-adjusted family, anchored by matriarch Eriko’s (Kyoko Koizumi) standing rule that each of them should be completely open and honest with one another at all times. It quickly becomes clear that this rule is actually a farce; the “secrets” that they’re open about are usually bizarre and sometimes hurtful, but the deeper emotional issues remain buried.
Each family member leads a darker, secret life on their own while being careful to maintain Eriko’s idea of the perfect family within the home. Eriko’s obsession with the perfect family was born as a reaction to how she remembers her own upbringing, but her mother (Asami Imajuku) eventually shows her that memories can be changed and people can start over if they really want to.
