The Shadow Spirit (2007)
The Shadow Spirit is a Japanese movie directed by Masato Harada and based on a mystery novel by Natsuhiko Kyogoku. It was released by Showgate in Japan and premiered in Fukuoka on November 28, 2007.
The film is set in the early 1950s, as a series of strange murders of beautiful young girls begins occurring in Tokyo and the daughter of a famous retired actress has gone missing. Meanwhile, a mysterious religious cult with an odd fascination with boxes has been gaining popularity.
Four people—a private detective named Enokizu (Hiroshi Abe), a writer named Sekiguchi (Kippei Shiina), a journalist named Atsuko (Lena Tanaka), and a police detective named Kiba (Hiroyuki Miyasako)—begin investigating individual aspects of the crimes for their own reasons when they are brought together by a used book store owner and Shinto priest named Chuzenji (Shinichi Tsutsumi).
Chuzenji suspects all the strange events that have been occurring are related to a research institute which has been conducting strange experiments, so they decide to combine their efforts to uncover the truth.
