On Wednesday it was announced that legendary horror manga artist Kazuo Umezu is writing and directing a film for the first time at the age of 77. The movie is titled Mother and is based on an original story which is said to unlock the secrets of “Umezu world”.
Kabuki actor Ainosuke Kataoka (41), who recently got his big break in the highly-rated TBS drama Hanzawa Naoki, will star as Umezu.
Thanks to the popularity of the Makoto-chan gag manga with children of his generation, Kataoka grew up a big fan of Umezu and never imagined he’d get the chance to actually meet him in person.
In the film, a publishing company is working on a book about Umezu’s life. The lead editor, Sakura, knows that Umezu’s late mother Ichie was very influential to his work. As the investigation continues, bizarre incidents begin occurring one after another. Soon, the grudge of a mother who should be dead sparks mounting fear around Umezu.
Actress Kimie Shingyoji (54) will play the key role of Umezu’s mother Ichie.
“Mother” will be released in Japan on September 27, 2014.
