On Monday in Japan it was announced that actor Masaki Okada will star in a movie adaptation of Kotaro Isaka’s novel Oh! Father. It was also revealed that Shioli Kutsuna will co-star as the film’s heroine.
Okada will play a high school student named Yukio who has four separate fathers. The film is an absurd family comedy in witch Yukio becomes involved in a series of bizarre incidents after witnessing a robbery. Kutsuna will co-star as Yukio’s classmate and self-proclaimed girlfriend, Taeko.
This will actually be the third time Okada has appeared in film adaptations of Isaka’s work. In 2007 he had a small role in Yoshihiro Nakamura’s The Foreign Duck, The Native Duck and God in a Coin Locker and in 2009 he co-starred in Junichi Mori’s Gravity’s Clowns. The new film will be directed by Michihito Fujii. Fujii previously worked as an A.D. under Yu Irie (8000 Miles).
Okada’s character is described as completely ordinary, except for the fact that he’s an only child in a family of six. Yukio’s four fathers are completely different from one another, but they’re all attempting to salvage their son’s love in a crisis. Shiro Sano will play Satoru, a brilliant university professor who’s in charge of Yukio’s education. Masahiko Kawahara will play Taka, a skillful gambler. Jun Murakami will play Aoi, a former host who has a way with women. And finally, Daisuke Miyagawa will play Isao, a middle school physical education teacher and sports enthusiast who has a particular fondness for martial arts.
Akira Emoto, Kento Kaku, and Tetsuji Sakakibara will also appear.
Filming of “Oh! Father” began in suburban Tokyo on May 20. A nation-wide release is planned for 2014.
