On Wednesday it was announced that Mirei Kiritani will get her first action combat role portraying a sentai (squadron) hero in Yuichi Fukuda’s upcoming tokusatsu movie Joshizu.
Expressing her excitement about the role, Kiritani mentioned that she’s been watching sentai hero TV programs with her brother since she was little and felt her tension rise the moment she first wore the costume, adding that she’s practiced cool hero poses several times.
Fukuda, who’s recently directed hero comedies like HK: Forbidden Super Hero and the television show Yuusha Yoshihiko, has spent many years working out a concept for sentai hero comedy with girls. He last worked with Kiritani while directing a 2009 episode of the Fuji TV drama 33 Minute Detective.
In the new film, Kiritani’s character Naoko Akagi, aka “Red” is a busy career-oriented woman who’s selected to fight against a mysterious villain.
Commander Charles assembles a team of five women from vastly different backgrounds to become allies of justice based entirely on the fact that their surnames include the Japanese words for specific colors. His team “Joshizu” includes the overly serious Red, the fashionable Blue, the wealthy heiress Navy, the dirt poor Yellow, and the aspiring theater troupe member Green. Together, they’re able to defeat opponents utilizing a special spinning move called the “Joshi Tornado”. In spite of their doubts, the team is abruptly thrown into a fight against a supervillain.
“Joshizu” will be released in Japan in early summer 2014.
