47 Ronin is a 2013 3D action movie directed by Carl Erik Rinsch. It was originally slated for release on November 21, 2012, but was pushed back to February 8, 2013 for further special effects work. It was later pushed back once again to Christmas Day 2013. It was later revealed that the film will actually premiere in Japan on December 6.
A theatrical trailer was released via iTunes Movie Trailers on July 24, 2013.
The film is based on the Japanese Chushingura legend, which is a fictionalized account of the real-life revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin for the death of their master, Asano Naganori. Because Chushingura is considered to be a separate entity from actual historical events, it’s common for minor details to change for each adaptation, even though the main theme of defending your honor in the face of certain death remains the same.
Rinsch’s adaptation will star Keanu Reeves as Kai, an original character who is in love with Asano’s daughter, Mika. After Asano’s death is caused by the treacherous Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano), Kai joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada) and his band of 47 ronin as they seek to avenge their former master. Rinko Kikuchi plays Kira’s top aide, the mysterious Lady Mizuki.
