Plot

Meiko is the wife of the president of a major medical company, so she convinces her lover—a charming doctor named Tokito—to murder her husband so that they can be together. They come up with the perfect plan so that Tokito can sneak into the man’s office and murder him in a way that makes it look like a suicide, but when he’s making his escape, the elevator breaks down. Meanwhile, a young couple takes off with his getaway car, leading to further confusion.

History

In the original Elevator to the Gallows, Maurice Ronet played an ex-Foreign Legion parachutist named Julien and Jeanne Moreau plays his lover, Florence. Together they hatch a plan for Julien to murder Florence's husband in his office and then execute the perfect getaway by rappelling out the window. Instead, a simple mistake leads to him getting trapped in an elevator over night as a young couple steals his car and Florence mistakenly believes he's taken off with another woman.
