On Saturday it was revealed that actor Kengo Kora will appear in Kiyoku Yawaku, the upcoming live-action adaptation of a popular manga by Ryo Ikuemi.

Kora will play Kazue Haruta, a childhood friend of the film’s protagonist Kanna (Masami Nagasawa). The role is significant to the plot because it’s a character that died in a traffic accident during the first year of high school with his last email addressed to Kanna, and as a result he continuously remains in her thoughts as she tries to cope with the loss.

Ikuemi’s manga—which carried a theme of loss, love, and growth—was serialized from 2004-2010 and reached a total circulation of 2.5 million copies. Although the original was presented in omnibus format, the film will focus on the Kanna Seto/Roku Akazawa chapter which was the climax of the series.

In addition to Kora, Aoi Nakamura has been cast as Kanna’s classmate Mayama. As previously announced, Masaki Okada will play Roku Akazawa, a young man who attempts to heal Kanna’s broken heart.

“Kiyoku Yawaku” will be released by Toho nation-wide in Japan on October 26, 2013.
